I. The DNA project has accomplished the discovery of a cluster of six Hogg
lines that were not previously known to be related. The resulting DNA
matches indicate that the following lines descend from a common ancestor:
1. descendants of John Hogg of Gloucester RI (line RI1690)
2. descendants of William Hogg of Londonderry NH (line NH1703)
3. descendants of Alexander Ogg b.ca.1745, Scotland (line MD1765)
4. descendants of James Hogg Sr. of Savannah GA (line GA1770)
5. descendants of Robert Hogg, b.1721, Southern Scotland (line PA1754)
6. descendants of James Hogue, b.1825, Pennsylvania (line PA1825)
We have determined the modal haplotype for this cluster. This haplotype
is designated "Hogg modal haplotype no. 1" and is identified as belonging
to the I1 haplogroup. The 11 tested project members that are a close
match with this modal haplotype are:
1. project id MD1765a, a 75 out of 75 (100%) match
2. project id NH1703c, a 37 out of 37 (100%) match
3. project id XXNNNNb, a 30 out of 30 (100%) match
4. project id NH1703b, a 74 out of 75 (98.7%) match
5. project id PA1754a, a 44 out of 45 (97.8%) match
6. project id NH1703a, a 41 out of 42 (97.6%) match
7. project id GA1770a, a 41 out of 42 (97.6%) match
8. project id GA1770b, a 73 out of 75 (97.3%) match
9. project id other17, a 70 out of 73 (95.9%) match
10. project id RI1690a, a 36 out of 38 (94.7%) match
11. project id PA1825a, a 71 out of 75 (94.7%) match
As a result of this discovery, descendants of these lines are endevouring
to determine the links that connect them to a common ancestor.
Also, we have developed a model for the conectivity of these six lines.
Click here for a discussion of that model.
II. The DNA data from VA1658a, VA1658b, and VA1658c, match each other. Also,
the DNA data from VA1656a, VA1656b, and VA1656c, match each other. But,
the VA1656 donors do not match do the VA1657 donors, even though the
published genealogy said they were cousins. The DNA data has revealed a
mistake in the published genealogy. Click here for a discussion of our
current understanding of these two families.
III. We have discovered very close matches between data from line NJ1682 and
data from other donors with the following names: Carr/Kerr/Cerr/Karr,
Hamilton, McLean, McIntire, Kilgour, and Roberts. It appears that the
ancestry of these families is interconnected in a very complicated way.
We have created a tree showing our best picture at this time of how these
lines are connected. Click here for that tree.
IV. It has been determined that the DNA donors from line VA1657, line NC1720,
and line VA1790 are a close match, indicating that these three lines
descend from a common ancestor. The desdendants of these three lines are
working to identify the common ancestor.
V. It has been determined that the DNA donors from lines GA1758, NC1787, and
SC1836 are a close match, indicating that these three lines descend from a
common ancestor. The desdendants of these three lines are working to
identify the common ancestor.
VI. It has been determined that the DNA donors from line AU1745 and line
GA1804 are a close match, indicating that these two lines descend from a
common ancestor. The desdendants of these two lines are working to
identify the common ancestor.
VII. The fact that the DNA of many Hoggs that have been tested do not match
any other indicates that these Hoggs do not have any common ancestors
within a genealocically relevant period. There are several distinct
founding Hogg lines. The following Hogg lines (in order of date of first
known ancestor) appear to be unique lines, not connected to any other line:
1. descendants of Richard Hoag of Boston MA (line MA1637)
2. descendants of Thomas Hogg of Northampton Co. VA (line VA1656)
3. descendants of John Hogg of York Co. VA (line VA1658)
4. descendants of Sir John Hoge of Musselburgh, Scotland (line NJ1682)
5. descendants of the lines in the I1 cluster: descendants of
John Hogg of Gloucester RI (line RI1690)
William Hogg of Londonderry NH (line NH1703)
Alexander Ogg b.ca.1745, Scotland (line MD1765)
James Hogg Sr. of Savannah GA (line GA1770)
Robert Hogg, b.1721, Southern Scotland (line PA1754)
James Hogue, b.1825, Pennsylvania (line PA1825)
6. descendants of Gideon Hogg of Caswell Co. NC (line NC1720) and
Sampson Hogg b.1790-1800, VA (line VA1790)

William G. Hogue, b.1787, North Carolina (line NC1787)
11. descendants of Riggel Hoeg, b.1785, Denmark (line DK1785)
12. descendants of George Hogg b.ca.1792 Scotland (line PA1893) and
William Hogg, b.ca.1800, Scotland (line IA1855)
13. descendants of James Hogg, b.1805, South Carolina (line SC1805)
14. descendants of George Hoage, b.1815-1820, Scotland (line NY1815)
15. descendants of William Hoag of Canada (line CN1826)
16. descendants of James Hague, b.1805, Lancashire, England (line RI1848)

25. descendants of James Hoggard b.1823, Arnold Notts. Eng.

Several Hogg lines have been identified but not yet tested. Further
understanding of the relationships between these lines awaits the testing
of more DNA donors.
